Frequently Asked Questions
Here you'll find answers to the questions we get asked most often about shipping, returns, sizing and caring for alpaca knitwear. If your question isn't covered, contact us and we'll be happy to help.
1. Shipping & Delivery
We ship worldwide from our own warehouse in Finland. If your country isn't available at checkout, contact us and we'll arrange delivery for you.
Shipping is free on orders over 200 € within the EU (standard delivery).
Otherwise standard delivery costs 5,90 € in Europe and express delivery (UPS, 1–2 working days) 14,90 €.
Delivery to the United States, Canada and Japan is 35 € and to Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore 45 € with DHL Express.
The exact options and prices for your country are shown at checkout. See the full list in our shipping policy.
We ship orders within 1–2 working days.
After that, delivery typically takes 2–5 working days in the Nordics and Central Europe, 3–6 working days elsewhere in Europe, and 3–5 working days with DHL Express outside Europe.
You'll get a tracking link by email as soon as your parcel leaves our warehouse.
Within the EU and Norway: no. All taxes and duties are included in the price, and there are no extra fees on delivery.
Outside the EU: prices at checkout are shown tax-free (Finnish VAT of 25,5 % is deducted automatically when you select your country). Your local customs authority may charge import VAT and duties when the parcel arrives, and these are paid by you. In most countries the total ends up close to the EU price.
UK: due to UK import VAT rules we can only ship orders over 135 £ to the UK.
Your tracking link is in the shipping confirmation email. If you haven't received one within three working days of ordering, check your spam folder and then contact us with your order number.
Contact us as soon as possible. If the order hasn't been shipped yet, we can usually change the size or address or cancel the order. Once it has shipped, you can use the normal 30-day return.
2. Returns & exchanges
You have 30 days from receiving your order to return any item for a full refund. Items must be unworn, clean and in resalable condition with the tags attached. Please try garments on carefully, as we can't fully refund items that show signs of wear, stains or perfume.
Within the EU: contact us with your order number and we'll send you a free return label. Please don't send the parcel back by other means, as we can't refund return costs paid without a label from us.
Outside the EU: email us before sending the item back. Return shipping is arranged and paid by you. Please use your national postal service or DHL Express and keep the receipt until you've received your refund.
The fastest way is to place a new order for the item you want and return the original one. That way the new item ships right away and you don't have to wait for the return to arrive. Refund for the returned item is processed as usual.
We process the refund within a few working days of receiving and checking the returned items.
The refund goes to the payment method you used.
EU customers are refunded the full amount including original shipping; outside the EU, the original shipping cost is not refunded and any import VAT you paid must be reclaimed from your local customs.
Refunds are made in euros. Small differences caused by exchange rate changes are down to your bank or card provider.
We want you to be happy with your purchase. If there's a manufacturing defect or the product doesn't match the description, contact us with photos and your order number.
3. Sizing & fit
In general, choose the size you normally wear. Every product page has a size chart with the exact measurements of the garment under "Size & Fit".
The most reliable way to pick a size is to measure a well-fitting piece of your own and compare it with the chart. You can also use the Fitle size finder on the product page, which recommends a size based on a few questions about you.
Alpaca knitwear adapts slightly to the shape of your body with wear, which is normal. It won't shrink as long as you follow the care instructions: hand wash in cool water and always dry flat.
You can also fine-tune the measurements yourself. Steam relaxes the fibres, and while the knit is warm and damp you can gently stretch it to lengthen the sleeves or body, or push it together to shorten them slightly. Lay the garment flat and shape it to the measurements you want, then let it dry in that shape. The same works after washing: shape the damp knit carefully before drying it flat.
4. Alpaca wool & our products
Compared to lambswool, alpaca is smoother and softer against the skin. Silk-alpaca and 100 % baby alpaca products are the softest; 100 % fine alpaca is slightly more robust.
Our garments are knitted densely to make them last, which can make a new sweater feel a little firm at first. It softens noticeably after a few wears and moulds to your body. You can speed this up by steaming or brushing the knit. If you have very sensitive skin, wearing a thin layer underneath in the beginning helps.
We use three alpaca qualities:
Fine Special alpaca is our standard quality: a slightly thicker and more robust fibre that makes the knit very durable and keeps its shape for years. Whenever a product's material is listed simply as 100 % alpaca wool, this is the quality used.
Baby alpaca is the finest and softest grade, with a lighter and silkier feel. Despite the name it comes from the first shearing of a young animal, not from baby animals.
Silk-alpaca blends alpaca with silk for a lighter, smoother knit with a subtle sheen. The exact material of each product is stated on the product page.
All wool products pill to some extent, but alpaca has the best pilling resistance of the common wool types. Alpaca fibres are long and smooth, so fewer fibre ends rise from the surface and they don't tangle into pills as easily as shorter, scalier fibres. We also focus on knitting density and structure so that the garments stay sharp-looking for years.
The darkest grey and black knits are slightly less pill-resistant because of the longer dyeing process. A knitwear brush or pill trimmer keeps them looking good with minimal effort.
If the knit garment doesn't freshen up by hanging it outside to air, and/or local stain removal does not help, it is time to wash it by hand:
- Pour cool or cold water (about 20 ° C) into a sink.
- Mix a small amount of soap suitable for wool fibers (e.g. white Marseille soap) with the water.
- Squeeze the product gently, allowing the water to pass through the knit.Avoid rubbing.Avoid wringing.
- Change the water – make sure the temperature remains the same – and rinse the product by squeezing it carefully in the fresh water.
- Drain the water and place the product on a towel. Roll the product inside the towel. For faster drying you can press the roll to get excess water off the product.
- Finally, shape the knit and dry it on a flat surface at room temperature – to avoid stretching, do not hang!
In order to keep your valuable alpaca garment in good condition and looking beautiful for years to come, hang it outside to air regularly, gently remove small stains, and wash the garment only when needed following the washing instructions.
All wool products pill to some extent, but alpaca wool generally has the best pilling resistance compared to other wool types, thanks to its special fibre.
Alpaca wool fibres are very long, which means that fewer individual fibres rise from the surface of the knit. Because of that, bundles are not formed as easily as with shorter fibre materials.
The surface of the alpaca wool fibre is also very smooth and less scaly than the fibres in other wool types, which means that the fibres do not stick to each other easily. That's why the alpaca knits tend to look very good and sharp even after a lot of use.
The more tightly knitted the product, the better it will last without pilling. We put focus on the knitting density and knitting structures to ensure long lasting products.
The darkest gray and black coloured knits are slightly less resistant to pilling due to the longer dyeing time of the yarn. However, you can keep the product looking good with some maintenance e.g. with knitwear brush and pill trimming. All the other excellent qualities of alpaca wool still remain in these garments.
Yes. Alpaca is loved by everyone who hates being cold. The fibre is partially hollow, so it traps air and insulates very well while staying light and breathable. It keeps you warm outdoors in the cold without overheating indoors, which is why our knits work from autumn through spring.
5. Washing & care
Alpaca rarely needs washing. Airing the garment outside refreshes it, and small stains can be removed locally. When it does need washing, wash by hand:
- Fill a sink with cool water, about 20 °C or colder.
- Add a small amount of wool soap, for example white Marseille soap.
- Squeeze the water gently through the knit. Don't rub or wring.
- Change the water, keeping the same temperature, and rinse by squeezing gently.
- Lay the garment on a towel, roll it up and press to remove excess water.
- Shape the knit to get the measurements back and dry it flat at room temperature. Never hang it to dry, as it will stretch.
Our care instructions say hand wash only, and that's what we recommend. Many customers do machine wash their knits successfully, but this is at your own risk: results depend on your machine, and we can't accept claims for garments damaged in a washing machine. If you decide to try it, use a wool or hand-wash programme with cold water and no spin (or the lowest spin), wash the garment inside a mesh laundry bag, and dry it flat. Never tumble dry.
Steaming is the best way to freshen and smooth a knit and it also softens a new garment. Hold the steamer a few centimetres from the surface. Avoid pressing with a hot iron directly on the knit.
You can alter the measurements with steam and stretching/packing the garment.
Fold, don't hang, to avoid stretching the shoulders. When you pack a garment away for a longer period, for example over the summer, always wash or air it first and make sure it's completely clean, as sweat and food residue attract pests. Clothes moths, carpet beetles and other fibre-eating insects love natural fibres like alpaca, so store knits in a closed bag or box in a dry place.
Cedar or lavender helps keep insects away, and taking the garments out to air every now and then during storage is good for them too.
6. Manufacturing & responsibility
Our cardigans, sweaters and dresses are knitted in Lithuania. Beanies are made in Finland. Scarves are made in Peru by our yarn supplier, whom we've worked with since Alpa started in 2012. Our Marseille soap comes from France and our knitwear brushes from Germany.
Yes. Alpacas in Peru graze mostly free in the Andes and are a respected national animal. Shearing once a year is a necessary part of their care. Alpaca wool is always mulesing-free, as mulesing is a practice used only on certain sheep breeds and is never done to alpacas.
Our yarn supplier is committed to responsible business and takes part in local charitable programmes, and we have visited them several times. Read more on our sustainability page.
